What is the Arno Profile System?

The A.P.S. Report is similar to, but is NOT personality testing! We believe that personality is formed as a result of how we were parented, the environment in which we grew up and circumstances that may have occurred throughout our growing up years. A persons temperament is who they really are underneath all that. The person that God created.

Who you are and what you have become as a result of your environment and learned behavior alters your inborn temperament and determines what choices you make in life; friends, spouse, career, children and even how you parent those children.

The goal of the A.P.S. is to return the individual to who God Created. Understand and identify individual strengths, weaknesses, and emotional needs. And identify ways you are attempting to meet those needs in healthy and unhealthy ways.

Many people take a personality test hoping to find out who they are and understand themselves a little better. Many are disappointed when they find themselves being placed in a single category that does not always match the way they really are. That’s where the A.P.S. Report differs from traditional personality testing. We recognize that each person is a unique creation of God. Each one has different tendencies socially, in decision making skills, and intimately. Using a system developed by Dr.‘s Richard and Phyllis Arno, we evaluate each of those three areas giving you a thorough and in depth look at your personal, unique inborn temperament.

Why would I be interested in Temperament Analysis?

The whole concept of temperament analysis rests on discovering who we truly are, the person God created rather than on who we have become. Most of us have a mask on, our personality, according to who we've learned to be, who we feel we are expected to be, and/or who we are forced to be from our family of origin and/or our peers. We can all acknowledge that very often our behavior and our language is a facade or a way of protection. As we grow and live, most of us experience feelings of hurt, disappointment, fear, rejection, loneliness, grief, guilt, and/or shame. These feelings are not pleasant and may cause us to project an image that is not necessarily true to who we really are. We think we need to protect ourselves using  outbursts of anger, verbal abuse, manipulation, control or withdrawal. Usually we don't like ourselves much at these times, causing internal and external conflict. Building these walls in our lives leads to feelings of isolation, loneliness and a lack of true intimacy in all our relationships. This is when we begin seeking understanding, wisdom or insight. Whether you may feel there is nothing wrong or a lot wrong in your life, a temperament analysis can only be beneficial. Only change brings growth, and change cannot occur without a point of truth. Once you learn the truth about yourself, you can validate yourself, and give yourself permission to be who you truly are. There is freedom in discovering this truth. You can finally feel strong and confident enough to take off the mask allowing the internal struggles to diminish with the external ones following closely behind.

How accurate is the evaluation?

The Arno Profile System (A.P.S.) used in this temperament analysis has been developed and tested by Dr.'s Phyllis and Richard Arno since 1983 for the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of the therapeutic procedure in office and online counseling. Over the past eighteen years, multiple testing and research have produced an accuracy rate of approximately 93% in identifying an individuals correct temperament.

  • No significant variations were found as a result of race or cultural differences.

  • No significant variations were found as a result of temporary mood swings.

  • Persons tested who were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, however, have been proven to be invalid.

What will I learn from the evaluation?

Why Do I Do The Things I Do?

The A.P.S. identifies three separate human interactions and identifies each one in two different ways:

  • Inclusion (social orientation and intellectual energies)

  • Expressed: What we say we want

  • Wanted: What we really want

  • Control (ability to make decisions and desire to take on responsibilities)

  • Expressed: What we say we want

  • Wanted: What we really want

  • Affection (interaction in deep relationships)

  • Expressed: What we say we want

  • Wanted: What we really want

What are the different Temperament Types?

Traditionally there have been four temperaments discovered:

  • Melancholy - has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, prone to genius, very creative, mind tends to work overtime, going over and over events of the past, needs alone time to regroup.

  • Sanguine - fun loving, will leave in the middle of a chore or assignment if they find out there is something fun going on somewhere, never wants to grow up, stressed out if there are not places to go and people to see.

  • Choleric - a drive to greatness, but will step on your toes to get there, needs lots of appreciation along the way.

  • Phlegmatic - quite stubborn and set in his ways, uncomfortable with confrontation and seeks peace at all costs to avoid strife, feels he needs sleep to regroup but never gets enough, very annoying to the Choleric as this is the one temperament that cannot be coerced into doing something if they don't want to.

  • During Drs. Arno research they discovered a fifth temperament, the Supine. The Supine is unique to the Arno Profile System.

  • Supine - one who loves to do things for people and enjoys people, but is very indirect and shy about letting this be known.

Who is the A.P.S. for?

Perhaps you have already found yourself in the descriptions above. But wait! Remember, we evaluate your temperament in three different areas, socially, in decision making skills or control, and affection or intimately.

Although you may recognize yourself in a predominant theme, there is so much more about you to be discovered. There is also a strong possibility that you are a blend of two temperaments, in one or all of the areas mentioned above.

  • We encourage every Christian to receive their own personal APS Report. The following age groups have their own APS Questionnaire:

  • Adults

  • Teenagers 13-17

  • Children 9-12

The report will be mailed back to you. (Do to confidentiality and licensing restrictions, we cannot administer the APS online.)

"We are fearfully and wonderfully made by our God who created the Heavens and the earth. We are very special and unique.

Understanding who God created you to be will help you to live a victorious Christian life. You will understand your weaknesses and learn how to surrender them to the Lord and, with His help, learn how to develop your strengths.

In Hosea 4:6 the Bible states: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..." Having this new knowledge will not only draw you closer to the Lord Jesus Christ, it will help you in your relationship with others, e.g., friends, co-workers and family members."
