This feast was the day to "afflict your soul" (fast from evening of 9th to evening of 10th (Le.23:26-32), and receive forgiveness of your sins. This was for sins not atoned for during the course of the year (Le.16:33). [See Hebrews 10:1 "…never…make those who come to it perfect."]. This removal of sins was only for one year (He.10:3). The High-Priest laid his hands on the head of a "scapegoat" (Le.16:8) and confessed over him the sins of the people. The goat was then led away to a solitary place.
